Love at First Bite is a new cafe in Olathe that opened on April 8. They serve coffee, boba tea, and Vietnamese sandwiches among many other items.
The shop was in the works for nearly a year before its owner, Summer Chitwood, was finally able to open. “There’s a lot of things you need to know to go through the process of opening a business like a business sign, general contractors, an architect. All that was not in my business plan,” Chitwood reflected.
Despite any obstacles she faced while getting her shop off the ground, Chitwood is delighted with how it turned out. “I’m very proud of this place because everything in here I designed myself. Every inch of this place—all the furniture, the rugs—everywhere you look is all me,” Chitwood said.
Chitwood’s passion for her cafe stemmed from a combination of ennui and love for her community. After years of working in the corporate world, Chitwood discovered that it wasn’t the life for her. “I just realized that I don’t really belong in an office where I just sit at my desk all day long,” Chitwood said.
Instead, she wanted to open a place where people could drop their phones and get to know each other. “We live in a society where most of us are on our phones or a tablet or computer,” Chitwood explained. To combat this, she decided to create conversation starters and welcoming coasters to help spark dialogue between strangers. Her main goal with all of this is to create a welcoming environment where people can “enter as strangers and leave as friends.”
