After a Great 2018 Season the Raven XC Program Looks Bright

Having trained over 100 miles in the summer, the ONW Cross Country team came to dominate the 2018 season. The season started off with a few casual meets to get the runners for tougher competition at the end of the season. The team also had many new experiences for the Raven Runners. The two biggest highlights of the season were the ball run and the Colorado trip! The first ever ball run began at Gardener High School and a couple of the Raven Runners ran part of the relay of 18.1 miles to deliver the game ball for homecoming that Friday night. The Colorado trip took place right before the end of season. This meet prepared the runners for the tougher course of Rim Rock and hard competition at regionals.

There’s no denying 2018 was a huge success for the girls team! Throughout the season many of the girls placed at multiple races showing the competitiveness of the ravens. Although there was individual success the team didn’t grow together until the Colorado trip. The girls became super close and pushed each other during workouts getting better and better each week. To begin the teams success it all stared at League. Here the girls placed 7th as a team with Leah Wellman placing 17th, being a part of the all sunflower league. Next was the most eventful meet for the varsity girls, regionals. The team had 3 girls; Lydia McGlocklin, Ashton Dain, and Leah Wellman, place in the top 15 and make it as individuals to State. But not only that, the girls were overjoyed when they heard the news they were crowned 3rd place at regionals for the first time since 2016, securing their place at the State Championships. At the State meet the girls placed 9th as a team, lead by Ashton Dain in 36th, Lydia McGlockin in 43rd, and Maleah Wardlaw in 70th. See these girls compete in their next xc meet August 2019!

The boys cross country team had a very eventful season. The team took a trip to Colorado Springs for a meet. The team also ran in the very competitive Rim Rock invitational and held their ground. For the first time since 2016 the boys team had a runner participating in state. Senior Brian Kitur ran a 17:00 for 15th in regionals to squeeze into the last spot to make it to state. Although only one runner made it to state this season, the future is looking very bright for the Ravens. Four underclassmen were on varsity: Logan Read, Hudson Hurtig, Alex Ling, and Henry Fasl. Make sure to stay tuned next September to see hear the Ravens success!

Congrats on a great season Cross Country! Look forward to see your Raven XC runners compete in Track and Field this Spring. With all this training the Ravens will be strong and ready to dominate for the 2019 season.
